Mont Terri is located at the Grimsel-pass in Switzerland at an altitude of 1300 metre. It's a hard-rock laboratory especially build to do mock-up test and experiments on new technologies to store nuclear waste.
One of the problems that can arise is that large amounts of gasses are produced by anaerobic corrosion and microbial degradation of metallic materials and organic waste disposed in the low/intermediate-level repository. The effects of these phenomena on sealing mechanisms for nuclear waste was investigated.
Figure: Installed sensors
The objective of FOS&S was to install a fibre optic sensor network inside the sealing configuration in order to monitor the hydro mechanical behaviour. Sensors installed are pressure, water leakage, temperature and porewater pressure sensors. All sensors are positioned in different layers in the bentonite-sand structure.
