Structural Health Monitoring of the Olympic Stadium

Scope

The main objective of the project is the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of the steel roof structure of the Velodrome and the Olympic Stadium in Athens, by means of a fibre optic sensing network. The obtained measurement results will improve the understanding of the mechanical behavior of the structure and hence increase the public safety.

The installed fibre optic sensing network will record the response of the structure due to static as well as dynamic loads. Such loads include:

  • wind, earthquake and/or thermal loading
  • transmitted ground motions and/or foundation settlements

In order to measure the structural response as a result of these loadings, different parameters are monitored. These include: strain, temperature, acceleration, displacement, underground pressure (due to geological stresses beneath the  foundation), wind direction and velocity,...

The different measurement data are monitored using a central data acquisition system. Warning signals of possible abnormalities are automatically generated based on adjustable pre-set alarm conditions and are send by email to the responsible.
